If the schedule permits, we can stop in the town of Pinchollo, the only pre-Inca town still inhabited, and also Maca, with its colorful local craft market and colonial church. Following lunch in Chivay (not included), we continue to Puno on the shores of Lake Titicaca. Overnight in Puno
Day 6: Lake Titicaca – Floating Islands of the Uros and Taquile (B/L)
The first stop on today’s excursion is the floating islands of the Uros, also called “Lake Town”. These unique islands are built in the traditional way from totora reeds and are used today as trade centers and home for the local inhabitants. The peoples use hand-crafted boats also made from totora as a mode of transport. We sail onward to Taquile Island, where the local community keeps its traditions alive through its artisan work and colorful traditional dress. Here roles are reversed and you will see men sitting around knitting in the streets. Lunch included. Overnight in Puno
Day 7: Departure to Cusco – La Raya/ Racchi/ Andahuaylillas (B/L)
The trip to Cusco takes most of the day stopping first at Pucara and later at La Raya, the highest point on the road between Puno and Cusco. The scenery of the South Valley of Cusco is spectacular and ideal for some great photography. Later, we stop at the grandiose Racchi ruins, also known as “The Temple of God Wiracocha”. Lunch will be served in a restaurant on the way. Finally we visit Andahuaylillas, site of a pretty colonial church from the 17th century, boasting an unusual organ littered with angels and cherubs. We will arrive in Cusco in the afternoon. Overnight in Cusco
Day 8: City Tour, Sacsayhuaman and Nearby Ruins (B)
In the afternoon you will enjoy a city tour of the Imperial City. This gives you a chance to see how the Andean and Spanish cultures co-existed and influenced the city. The tour starts at Santo Domingo Convent, built on the site of Koricancha, which was an important ancient Inca palace and center of worship of the Sun God. The tour continues to the Main Square, site of the Cathedral and the La Compañía Church. Later we visit the imposing Sacsayhuaman Fortress, just one example of the military Inca architecture in the area. Finally, the tour heads to the nearby archaeological sites of Qenko, Puca-Pucara and Tambomachay, which can be found to the north east of the city. Lovers of the mystic may want to meditate at the Sacsayhuaman complex. Overnight in Cusco
Day 9: Sacred Valley of the Incas: Pisac Market and Ollantaytambo (B/L)
Today we drive in the direction of the Sacred Valley, following a direct route to Pisac. On the way, we stop for photographic opportunities and to admire the Urubamba valley. It seems carpeted with crops—the local people waste no land that can be used for agriculture. On arrival in Pisac we visit the colourful indigenous market, where there is a chance to buy souvenirs and gifts. There is a buffet lunch in Urubamba before continuing on to Ollantaytambo. With its cobbled streets, preserved channels and fortress, this village is a sight to behold. In days gone by, the fortress guarded access to the less important area of the valley.
